Would you do chairs for this?
There is an upcoming tournament that will last 7 days and the TD is proposing to pay for housing and meals but no pay. Would you do this to get your required chairs to maintain your certification?
Please comment on why or why not.

Re: Would you do chairs for this?
I would only do this if I were financially well off, there were no other chairs upcoming and needed the chairs for certification. I would only stay for the minimum length of time to meet certification.
By working for free, without it being for a good cause, appears bad for you, bad for fellow officials and rewards the TD for poor treatment of officials.

Free chairs!
Of course we should not work for free. If we want to be regarded as certified umpires who have gone to school, spent our own money, time, and effort to become certified, and have put on court time into our circumstance, we should expect appropriate compensation. I wonder if that TD / tennis facility would be happy to donate the court time or their own time without compensation to run a tournament. Probably not! We either view all our participation in running tournaments as part of a team, or we don't "play". Everyone operating from the same page results in a better outcome than if we opporated separately.

I agree with and I informed the TD that proposed the above scenario and told him we are professionals and we don't work for free. He now plans to pay all the chair umpires, especially since he did not get any reply to his proposal.

No official will be respected by a TD if they work for free...
